The US Customs and Border Protection has announced that it is currently unable to process billions of dollars in refunds resulting from tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, due to issues with its digital import processing system.
The agency’s executive director, Brandon Lord, stated in a filing on Friday that the system is “not well suited to a task of this scale”. This admission comes after the Supreme Court struck down the tariffs imposed by Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) last month. Furthermore, the International Trade Court has ruled that importers affected by the tariffs are entitled to refunds.
The inability of the US Customs and Border Protection to process the refunds will likely have significant implications for importers who have been impacted by the tariffs. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the agency will address the issues with its digital import processing system and fulfill its obligations to provide refunds to those entitled to them.
