The European Union has ordered Apple and Meta to open their iOS and messaging services to competitors, as part of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that aims to promote fair competition in the digital market.
The DMA, which came into effect in May 2023, introduces new compliance requirements for “gatekeepers,” defined as large digital platforms providing core platform services. This move is seen as a significant step towards increasing competition in the digital landscape. The European Commission has already imposed significant fines on non-compliant companies, with Apple and Meta being fined €500 million and €200 million, respectively, in April 2025.
The enforcement of the DMA is expected to have a significant impact on the digital market, as Apple and Meta will be required to open their platforms to competitors, promoting innovation and choice for consumers. As the DMA continues to shape the digital landscape, it will be interesting to see how these companies adapt to the new requirements and how the European Commission will continue to enforce compliance.
