A new report by Checkr has revealed a growing divide between managers and employees over the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace. As companies increasingly adopt AI to stay competitive, the survey of 3,000 workers found that 64% of managers feel pressure to adopt AI, while only 38% of employees share this sentiment.

The report highlights a significant disconnect between managers and employees on the importance and use of AI. While 58% of managers believe AI use is becoming an “unspoken performance requirement,” only 29% of employees agree. Additionally, 45% of managers think employees are using AI regularly, but only 18% of employees hold this view. The survey also found that 40% of managers trust AI outputs “often or almost always,” whereas 59% of employees do not. The lack of clarity on AI expectations is also a concern, with 34% of employees stating they don’t know who is responsible for their company’s AI push.

Previous research by Gallup has shown that manager adoption of AI plays a significant role in employee adoption. However, the Checkr report notes that AI adoption has been particularly high in hiring and recruiting efforts, with most employers using AI for some aspect of the hiring process. This has led to an “arms race” where applicants use AI to make themselves more attractive and circumvent résumé screeners. The report found that 81% of managers have encountered résumés that seem to have been enhanced or written by AI, and 77% believe candidates use AI to appear more qualified.

The use of AI in hiring has also raised concerns about fairness and trust. Only 27% of employees trust AI tools to make fair hiring decisions, while 70% of managers have faith in these tools. However, both managers and employees share concerns that AI will make it easier for workers to misrepresent their skill set, with at least 80% of both groups expressing this concern.

The divide between managers and employees on AI use is likely to have significant implications for the future of work. As companies continue to invest in AI, it is essential to address the concerns and mistrust among employees to ensure successful adoption. The Checkr report highlights the need for clear communication, strategy, and vision on AI use to bridge the gap between managers and employees and harness the full potential of AI in the workplace.
