Taara, a light-based internet provider that spun out of Alphabet‘s “moonshot” incubator last year, has launched Taara Beam, a device that provides 25Gbps connectivity over invisible beams of light within cities, given line of sight is available.
The Taara Beam device is a shoebox-sized unit that can be mounted to street poles and rooftops, enabling city-wide connectivity at distances of up to 10km. Weighing in at 8kg, the device consumes approximately 90W of power. In contrast to last year’s Taara Lightbridge, which connects communities separated by water and mountains at distances of up to 20km, the Taara Beam is designed for urban environments. A key advantage of Taara‘s technology is its speed, which rivals that of fiber in terms of throughput.
The launch of Taara Beam is expected to have a significant impact on the way cities approach internet connectivity. With its high-speed capabilities and relatively low power consumption, Taara Beam has the potential to provide fast and reliable internet access to urban areas, potentially rivaling traditional fiber connections. As the technology continues to develop, it will be interesting to see how Taara expands its reach and explores new applications for its innovative light-based internet technology.
