Adam Conner, vice president for technology policy at the Center of American Progress, has been using Anthropic‘s advanced AI agent, Claude Code, to build projects, including an AI labor market simulator. This simulator, built from Bureau of Labor Statistics and Federal Reserve data, projects the potential impact of AI on the economy. Conner was able to get it running in just a day, demonstrating the accessibility and power of Claude Code.

Anthropic‘s Claude Code has gone beyond its initial use for coding tasks, with users discovering its potential for other tasks. This has led to a “vibe coding” phenomenon, where developers and non-developers can harness the AI agent to write code and create projects. Conner used Claude Code to form his own policy council, consisting of 21 AI agents with competing ideologies and political agendas, which generated 24-page proposal papers, 12-page draft legislations, and hundreds of policy ideas within minutes. The capabilities of Claude Code and its advanced AI workplace tool, Claude Cowork, could potentially change the job market, with Anthropic spokesperson stating that “we’re going to see AI involved in improving and building itself more and more.”

Claude Cowork is a UI update to Claude Code for the mass market, allowing users to prompt the AI to complete nearly any computer-related task. It can organize files, turn screenshots of invoices into actionable spreadsheets, and even action slide comments. Claude Cowork has already impacted the economy, with $300 billion being wiped from software and data stocks after the release of plug-ins that can tailor Claude Cowork to specific roles. Nvidia, Ring, and OpenAI are not directly mentioned in the context of Anthropic‘s Claude Cowork, but the AI landscape is rapidly evolving, with the pace of release accelerating.

The risk is that the effectiveness of AI agents like Claude Cowork could impact entry-level hiring, with long-term consequences for the economy. According to Conner, “fewer junior roles eventually leads to fewer qualified candidates for mid-level and senior roles.” The mass adoption of advanced AI tools like Claude Cowork will likely be inevitable, and labor market displacement is expected, although the extent is unclear. Companies like Anthropic are at the forefront of this change, with Claude Cowork being a significant step towards a future where AI is deeply integrated into knowledge work.
