A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers is calling for a ban on the sale of certain chipmaking tools to China, specifically targeting ASML‘s Dutch exports of lithography machines used to create advanced chips.
The lawmakers want the U.S. government to impose export controls on all wafer fab equipment bound for China, with the exception of those that can be made locally. They are also urging allies to follow suit, in an effort to restrict China’s access to advanced chipmaking technology.
The move is likely to have significant implications for the global semiconductor industry, particularly for companies like ASML that rely heavily on exports to China. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the U.S. government and other countries will respond to the lawmakers’ demands, and what impact this will have on the industry as a whole.
